This unit was developed by elementary teachers, an elementary principal, a college professor, and college students. It was developed by the Understanding By Design (UBD) Model incorporated with the LOFTI area project TIMS. Our group designed this unit because of many unhealthy nutritional practices in the United States and is designed for a fifth grade class.
Enduring Understanding:
Students will understand that their daily
choices of diet and exercise directly affect

is to plan and implement a ˝ day wellness fair for another 5th grade
class.

expert in nutrition and/or physical activity.

target audience is your peers and parents.

challenge involves creating engaging activities that educate the
participants
in proper diet and exercise.
Product: You
have been asked to design a station in the Eat Smart – Play Hard
Wellness fair
based on the research you have done throughout your unit on health
and wellness.

The Food
Guide Pyramid
This is an excellent resource for students, parents and teachers. It
explains about the food pyramid, plus other health related subjects, such as
dealing with feelings, everyday illness and growing up.
Dole 5 A Day:
The Dole site contains a great deal of information on anything relating to
nutrition. It has links for lesson plans, student activities, awards and
much more! Check it out to see how the site could help you.
US Government Nutrition Sites: Food Pyramid:
Not only does this site have information on the food pyramid, but it has
information that can benefit all aspects of nutrition.

It may not be a site that you let children explore on their own, although it
does have a link for games.
Winter Activity Pyramid:
Many things can be done very easily during the spring,
summer, and fall, but what do you do about the winter? Check out this site
