Wellness Unit

A resource for teachers by teachers

This unit was developed by elementary teachers, an elementary principal, a college professor, and college students.  It was developed by the Understanding By Design (UBD) Model incorporated with the LOFTI area project TIMS. Our group designed this unit because of many unhealthy nutritional practices in the United States and is designed for a fifth grade class. 

Enduring Understanding: 
    Students will understand that their daily choices of diet and exercise directly affect       
        their health and well-being.

Essential Questions: 
   
Why does nutrition play an important role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle?
    In what ways does physical activity impact health and well-being?
    How can analyzing statistical data about physical activity/nutrition help to make
        healthy life choices?  Advertising Techniques
    How does the media impact our choices?

Knowledge and Skills: 
Upon conclusion of this unit, the student will be able to ---

    Define a healthy diet
            Know and use the food pyramid
            Know and use different food groups
            Understand how different nutrients impact health
            Record daily food intake
            Evaluate food labels

    Collect, organize and display data 
            Use excel to record data
            Turn data into graphs
            Use the formulas in excel to add, subtract and average numbers

    Plan an active life style 
            Use the activity pyramid to plan daily activities
            Operate a digiwalker

    Use the Internet to locate research materials
            Read for information
            Evaluate web sites based on accuracy of information, ease of navigation, "fun
            factor"

    Recognize how the media impacts our daily choices
            Identify basic techniques used by advertisers
            Plan 'commercials' for healthy choices

    Plan and implement activities for a wellness fair based on making healthy choices

    Math Standard 6.1: Students will collect, organize, and display data in a variety of
        forms.
    Math Standard 6.2: Students will use statistical data about life situations to make
        predictions and justify reasoning.
    Reading Standard 1.18: Students will draw inferences, conclusions or generalizations
        about text and support them with textual evidence and experience.
    Health Standard 2.1: Students will evaluate the impact of culture, media, and
        technology on personal health decisions and practices.
    PE Standard 3.2: Students will evaluate the health-related fitness benefits resulting
        from participation in different forms of physical activity.

Performance Task:
        Goal: Your task is to plan and implement a ˝ day wellness fair for another 5th grade
            class.
        Role: You are an expert in nutrition and/or physical activity.
        Audience: The target audience is your peers and parents.
        Situation: The challenge involves creating engaging activities that educate the
            participants in proper diet and exercise.
        Product: You have been asked to design a station in the Eat Smart – Play Hard
            Wellness fair based on the research you have done throughout your unit on health
            and wellness.
        Performance Standard: Your station must meet the following requirements:
            Inform participants about healthy life choices.
            Maximize nutrition and physical activity
            Engages participants for an allotted time period of 10”.

The Food Guide Pyramid  This is an excellent resource for students, parents and teachers.  It explains about the food pyramid, plus other health related subjects, such as dealing with feelings, everyday illness and growing up.

Dole 5 A Day: The Dole site contains a great deal of information on anything relating to nutrition.  It has links for lesson plans, student activities, awards and much more!  Check it out to see how the site could help you.

US Government Nutrition Sites: Food Pyramid: Not only does this site have information on the food pyramid, but it has information that can benefit all aspects of nutrition. 

5 A Day the Color Way - Ideas to make healthy smoothies

Pics for Learning:  Food Pyramid: This is a lesson plan that has students designing their own food guide pyramid using pictures and analyzing their food consumption.

Veggie Power Cyberhunt: Another cyberhunt!  This cyberhunt tests the students knowledge about vegetables.

Healthy Choices for Kids Online - A complete unit plan

Got Milk - This site has pictures taken with people that have taken pictures for the milk mustaches.  A possibility for this would be to have your students take pictures with milk mustaches and make a bulletin board!

Kellogg - activities for kids and lesson for teachers: Contains an unit plan on food along with along with a kit that compliments that unit plan.  It also has a variety of recipes.

Kellogg Cereal Labels: This site contains a list of all the cereal made by Kellogg along with their nutrition labels.

Food Finder - Gives nutritional information about fast foods

Nutrition Café - Select you favorite meal, calculates nutrients + other online activities

Games from Zoom Rules for old and new games - students can submit their own games.

VERB This is a great site that encourages kids of all ages to get active.  It includes game rules and tips for playing

Shape Up America: This site has some great articles and activity ideas that can help Americans shape up!

Body Fat Lab: This site not only contains information about body fat, what it is and the basics, but it also contains information about where the presidents stack up compared to each other!

The Fitness Pyramid: This site contain a picture of the activity pyramid.  It also contains a list of activities for students to participate in with their families! Never heard of the activity pyramid, well, check it out!  It is neat!

Activity PyramidJust another version of the activity pyramid.  Along with different activities for students to do that fall under the different categories!

My Own Activity Pyramid: This is a form that the children can fill out regarding the activity that they wish to partake in!

The Kids Activity Pyramid: This is a free publication that gives the students some ideas of how to fill in the activity pyramid and the second page is a blank one that allows your students to keep track of their activities

Fun in Seven: This site contains a lot of information regarding fitness and physical activity.  It may not be a site that you let children explore on their own, although it does have a link for games.

Winter Activity Pyramid: Many things can be done very easily during the spring, summer, and fall, but what do you do about the winter?  Check out this site for a list of many winter activities!

Walking Lesson Plans --

Braiding and Weaving: This lesson plans gives students a variety of paths that they can walk with a group of 2-3 students.

Technology Lesson Plan: This is a simple lesson plan using digiwalkers

My Exercise Plan: Designed for high school students by NASA explorers. This lesson plan has the students learning about how astronauts exercise in space.

Fitness Lab: This lesson plan teaches the students the value of exercise through active participation.
