Many maps use letters and numbers to help the viewer located specific things on the map; letters for the Y axis and numbers for the X axis. The letter is given first and the number second. These are called coordinates. For example. to describe where the Auditorium is n the map, one would write E-5. On the map, block numbers are the larger numbers and lot numbers are the smaller numbers. There are two parts to this activity.
Use the map of the Lake Madison Chautauqua to locate the following:
Part 1: What coordinates describe the location of the following places?
Part 2: What is located at the following coordinates (not avenues)?
Variations: Go to MapQuest and key in your school's zip code. Print out the map and draw a grid. Label the X and Y axis and assign numbers and letters. Use you map to identify the coordinates of landmarks in your community.
