Over 2500 trees were planted in the first two years of the Lake Madison Chautauqua as part of the development of the grounds. One hundred years later, these line of "baby box elders" (actually maples, elms, ash and so forth) are the only remaining physical sign of the Chautauqua grounds.. The Auditorium, the Grand View Hotel, and other buildings are gone, but current aerial photography of the area provides a map of the original grounds. The "babies" are now grown, and they tract lines on the landscape marking what were once intended streets. A circle of trees surrounds an area where the Auditorium used to stand.

The TerraFly site allows viewers to fly over any site they want. Key in zipcode 57042, click on the lower right side of the map and 'fly' to Lake Madison. Zoom in on top right side of Lake Madison. Right mouse click to see if you are over Chautauqua.
Can you find the tree lines? Key in your school's zip code. Print out the map and label the streets and other landmarks. Draw an aerial map of your school. Don't forget the balls that are on top of the school!
